Collection: Mounted Nepenthes

With around 170 species and some natural hybrids, the genus Nepenthes are carnivorous plants that feed on insects and even small vertebrates such as birds, frogs and other small mammals. Found across South-East Asia, Southern China, Philippines, Madagascar and Northern Australia, where the grow in nutrient poor environments, thus the reason why they have evolved to trap and digest animals to get the nutrients they need to grow. The pitcher starts off as a small bud at the tip of a leaf and gradually expands until fully formed, inside the pitcher is filled with digestive enzymes and slippery walls, once an animals falls in, there is no escape. The fluid breaks down the animal inside and the plant absorbs the nutrients.
